Tony,
For ease of viewing, I have done a 180 on your pic.
Seeing those numbers clearly really helps.

My head gets flat when I stand on it, and my arms eventually give out at the age of 68.
;-)
I think I need to return to the Parts List to examine the steering column part number.
It might prove to be helpful. Can't hurt and might provide some clues....

Where is Bill Moore when we have technical questions and discussions of this nature?

Just found this:-
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=256610
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_147_Kleinlieferwagen

Looks like, according to this bloke, they come for a Type 147 Kleinlieferwagen (AKA a Fridolin)
Picture looks like he might be right.
So there you go, cheers
Tony

OK, mine didn't have the indicator ring, because the switch was an early Oval type that you had to cancel

AFAIK CB came out with coarse spline column and matching coarse spline 3 spoke steering wheel and indicator stalk out of early "Standard" beetle. Fine spline 3 spoke steering wheel may fit but would Volkswagen install a miss match on an off-road vehicle?

Found this while surfing around.
Same part number as the CB #, but off white or beige.
I jokingly refer to it as an Albino 3 spoke steering wheel.
You may need a bank loan to buy this one.

Strange that the white one is the same part number as a black one. I like the way wheels with this part number are advertised as everything from KDF and early standard to early Bus, when it looks like they don’t fit any of them.
There are references to 40 spline 20mm steering columns, Beetle, Type3, Ghia to 60 to 70, but these CB wheels definitely have 48 splines, so it’s not a standard version of them.
Gary
Mine has the same non cancelling blinker switch, I’m guessing the wheels just came with the cancelling ring on them so they left them on. Don’t know where yours went? That one came from the last know CB on the register, KO861, and my car,, KO813 is fairly late production too.
Fish26
It looks like they did put a 48 spline on a 24 spline column. The assembly that Gary has, and the one that I have, both came from complete CBs so they are very likely to be original. Also there doesn’t seem to be any evidence (yet) of any other wheel that they could have used. Ratting a wheel from a Fridolin is well in keeping with the philosophy of CB production.

So, let’s see some other people’s wheels, come on, get em off. (Don’t break the horn button)
I still want to know what the spline is on a 68 to 74 bus, anyone?
Can’t say it isn’t interesting. Keep it up.

Still can’t attach pictures, no wonder people go to face book

Tony,
I think Bill Moore's leadership role may have just passed to you.
You have the same instinctive curiosity about all things CB that Bill possessed.
It fascinating to me......and I make NO PRETENSE of knowing diddlle about this topic.
I think the whole early VW steering wheel question is a lot deeper than anyone imagines.
There must have been literally parts bins of steering wheels in a dedicated warehouse, that could have been put into production as needed at almost at a moment's notice.

'It fits, put it on, and be damned the parts number and illustrations.'

For anyone with the interest, there's a new thread at VW Country Buggy Australia Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/groups/302252683315626/ , further discussing the topic of CB steering wheels.

I got this wrong- I started another thread. I was going thru the box that holds all the CB steering wheel stuff, and found the cancelling ring and OG screws. Forgot how it was when I first got it.

I have a 73 Bus wheel here and it's really fine spline - but only 18mm at the start of the splines. The 65 Beetle wheel I have is 21mm at the base of the splines. So has there been any progress on which flasher switch will work-especially if it is able to cancel.

Hi Gary
Steve was going to get this one
VWC-113-953-513-A - TURN SIGNAL SWITCH - BEETLE 56-59
https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D113%2D953%2D513%2DA
but he had some other issues and didn't get it.
That's the one that fits the column, but I can't say if it will cancel or not.
It has 6 wires, not 3, but we could work that out.
Cheers
Tony

Good day Tony,
I went thru every one they have on their catalog, but hard to tell from pics if there is a trigger mechanism for cancelling. They have nothing either in the descriptions. The wires wont be an issue.Would be excellent to have the early look switch with a cancelling set up.Any progress at your end??
