The better half reckons her 1600 beetle does 85mph (on a privately owned, no speed limit German autobahn north of Wollongong) Is that good?

What can a stock (or silly) beetle wind out to before either meltdown or terrifying high speed handling occurs?

I guess spending money on handling comes into it as much as power, but is it possible to have a performance car?

As fast as the tow truck carrying it can go.

Cheers

Whats the differance between pushing a beetle and putting your hands up Kylie Minogues top.

You feel more of a tit pushing a beetle.

i can get my 1600 up to 140, but its mainly due to the kads. My old 1600 didnt fell comfortable pusing past 100, but that was a semi-auto and didnt have dual kads.

mmm...got my 67' with a 1640 up to 140km/h too, then she started to feel real floaty in the tail so I back right off.

something about the air clinging to the curved shape and it lifts the car up at high speed. fluid dynamics and all that. An old guy told me about it once. you put the convex side of the spoon right near running stream of water and the edge of the stream of water gently pulls it sideways right into the main stream. got an italian name, the 'canneloni' or 'luigi' effect or something.

so over 100mph you need a rear wing of some sort. that's what they found racing beetles at bonneville,

but please don't hear me telling people to put awful whaletails on their cars? :cussing

oh BTW, I've had my buggy (a 2.5l) up to 80mph. that was no where near the top of 3rd gear and it felt even worse than the beetle, the whole thing started to shake. 🙁

so I spose I'll take it easy, beside you nearly get blown out of the car :o

160km/hr on the dot, at 5000rpm on the dot. thats in a L bug with a 1776cc, twin dells, mild cam etc. It produces about 70hp at the rear wheels (assume about 100hp at the fly wheel), std gb and 205/60r15 and lowred.

I have an old book (70's) that has a graph of Hp vs speed for a beetle, eg to get x mph you require y hp at the engine. its a rough guide.

i think 100mph requires rougly 100hp, which is right for my car.

Umm, does downhill on the Hume count? if so I managed to get a stock 1600 to 100mph, well I saw 160kmph touched by the needle anyways. Scared the b:jesus out of myself doing it. was light as crap and had to slow down gently to stay on the road.

My freind ben had his oval with a 2.8l type 4 motor on a porsche 5 speed maxed out in 4TH at 135 mp/h. YES MP/H. That is bloody fast.
Also done on a privately owned no speed limit freeway link road.😀

Got a stock 1300 lowered with 14's to 75mph down Richmond rd. Didn't feel real good at this speed but it will handle 65mph no worries at all. I thought it was bloody impressive of the old girl to go that fast. Not an experience I want to do again in a hurry.

Seen 6200rpm in 4th on a 4.1 diff and fatties - I think that's 210km/h. Gentle downhill. 5800rpm on the flat. Fast e-fukken-nuff....
