Pete does this mean that the general public that aren't into vw's will be buying V8's since all their V6's will be getting blown away by beetles ??
Jak
Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!
I have respect for anyone that can make a seemingly harmless motor turn into a weapon.
We all know V8's have typically been built into all manner of race vehicles.
When a Beetle with a type 1 motor in it blows away a V8 it is sweeeeeet victory.
I feel the same when my supercharged EH Holden 6 cyl leaves Commodore V8's for dead.
When they ask what's in it I just say "Oh just an old red six" 😀
Australian VW Power, issue No.18 December / January 1991 Pete.
With only a 284Duration cam with 360thou lift & Kadrons it's 100hp @ the wheels, holy crap, I most certainly must be doing something wrong.
With 298 duration & 555thou lift & 45mm Dells I just can't get these No.s Maybe I'm trying too hard??
Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!
thats a hardcore cam... sure you want that? ask stan you might just get ten horseys out of a simple config. change 😀
those heads we were talking about will probably do that, but they're an exy change... 94 horse is awesome for a diy motor. i just don't have the money or experience to risk fiddling with combos and blowing bits up. hence the steroids option. power, and no wuckas.
I used Stans 32/68 cam for 2 years, I then changed to the K-8 ,still with 1.25 rockers, went from 430 lift to 500thou lift & the 1/8th mile went from 10.4 to 9.8 with only the cam change.
Nuff said really?
Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!
Stan reccomends using 1.25 rockers with that cam, but not the 1.4's. I've used Stans products for many years Pete, still use his anti-surge sump, theres nothing on the market that can beat it!

Well 121.5hp at the wheels is what you will get with the new Steroid spec POBJOY. One of Stan's customers had his dynoed and tuned at CBB on the weekend, 121.5hp !!! ......... not bad for a street car............ and being the exact same motor anyone can purchase with a 25000km/12 month warranty😀😀
HotRodMatt wrote:That is a very impressive dyno run! Now aren't you wishing you came to CBB for your dyno Craig? :P
Good to see that putting ones mind to tuning is just as important as getting the right combo.
Congrats to both Stan for building it and Mike for interpreting the tune and the dyno results.
Hope to see that bug eat some rice now.
I agree :thumb up to both
I will be using the services at CBB in the future Matt, just couldn't on the Dyno Day.
As for the $ comparison, your dreaming Jak if you think you can duplicate your motor using all brand new components with a new aluminium case, new carbs etc . for $16/hp ..........Compare apples to apples mate.
I will look forward to seeing how long and how many engine combo's it will take for you to see 120HP@the wheels :P
So what size will it be then ???? 2.3lt
Congrats again to Mike for the work done on one of Stan's customers Steroids motor.

As I've said many times before craIg, if I didn't enjoy spending so much time in the garage or have a genuine interest in building my own motors & I had 10g's just laying around then I would definantly give Stan a call.
As for the warranty? My fathers machine work is second to none, can't beat 40+ years experience.............& it's free:thumb

question for jak,
how many different types of engine combos have you put together and what would you say is the best that you have found.i have seen that you have posted heaps of dyno sheets so i asume you have tried a few.
Gday everyone i dont get an oppurtunity to join the post very often but after reading this one i thought i might give an unbiased opinion.
After many engine rebuilds with Larry (Keith Haeusler) some very succesful some well lets just sat not so good,we have squeezed 125.9 dynoed rwhp from my 1916 combo.
Stan Pobjoy now is offering around 120 rwhp with a warranty. How does he do this? Well i guess he has being developing his combo for many years and is now confident in its reliability and performance.
If i wanted to get someone to build me a 1916 and i was in a position to pay someone Stans offer would be very attractive. His motors after racing against them produce plenty of hp and reliability.
Just and unbiased opinion
Cheers Col

Are the heads shelf 044s or ported by stan?
Is Gregs engine one of these with dual plugs?(44 idfs?)
Re heads: Off the shelf 044.
Greg has Eliminator heads with twin plugs...and I think 48 idf's.
And Colin what you and Keith have done with your 1916 is impressive.
