Hello
I wonder, what are good spare parts to have on hand for the discerning 6 volt Beetle owner?
What spare parts are good to keep in case something decides to give up the ghost?
I have x2 spare fan belts, the x2 sump plate seals, 6 volt tail light bulbs.
Are there anything engine wise that are hard to find or acquire as original items that should be snapped up and kept as spares? generator?
Obviously a spare engine would be nice, but any accessory parts of the motor that are good to have on hand?

I have a large bag of goodies that I take away with me full of spares when I go on long trips in my bug.
For starters a throttle and clutch cable.
Yeah, a spare engine would be the ideal situation.
Prob a starter motor would be a smart spare to have. A spare battery is also handy.

don't worry about spares just join NRMA 😂
for when it goes into tow truck mode
don't worry about the spare battery as it will just go flat sitting around
Just buy a little Jump Starter you can get them for $60 from Repco or Supercheap.
NRMA/RACQ and a mobile phone.

Can you get 6 volt jump starters? I haven't looked.
But I have a 12 volt one and have used it many times for myself and when I've seen someone on the side of the road with a flat battery.

A can of WD40 & a roll of Duct tape - If it don`t move use the Wd. If it does & shouldn`t use the tape! The nett result being a car held together with tape but doesn`t squeak! Now can some one cut me out of the car as i need to go for a p. cheers
The jump starter I have has a switch to switch from 12v to 6v. But it's almost older than electricity so dont go asking for where I got it or what brand it is.
I got from my father, if you were wondering.

"Bad News" travels fast
a manual to suit a your year model and a copy of the idiots manual.
sOME PETrol and a bOX of matches 😂😂
😂🤪😂🤪😂
car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲
Ian Ian Ian I am not letting you anywhere near my bug.
🤪😂🤪
Actually I was going to say a giggler hose and a spare 5lts of fuel if you have a bug with no fuel gauge like mine just for on long trips.

Do You mean the jump starters with a battery in them??
I've only seen 12 volt models of those...
Jumper leads on the other hand can be used on ANY voltage - the thicker the better - and with good clamps on the ends that are screwed on -
A 6 volt beetle with an engine in good tune will always start with a push... use 2nd gear...

well I agree on the FAN BELT - CABLE JOINER for when the throttle cable snaps off next to the carby...
a cable joiner or a new clutch cable - manual cars.
VW spark plug socket - that lets you replace the fan belt too. - Can of WD 40 - Screwdrivers - spanners OE etc & sockets - New set of POINTS - New Spark Plug [1]
I also carry -
1 long Spark Plug LEAD - New DISTRIBUTOR CAP -
new ROTOR - new ACCELERATOR CABLE - spare SUMP PLATE NUTS - sump plate GASKET AND WASHER KIT -
new TAPPET COVER GASKETS - FEELER GAUGES - BATTERY JUMPER CABLES - 1 litre OF CASTROL GTX2 - new HEADLAMP GLOBE H4 -
a new CONDENSER in case My electronic ignition ever stops - DIGITAL multimeter - wires and screws -
Strobe TIMING LAMP - High capacity tyre pump -

The NMRA won't have a VW belt as they aren't common.
or points or plugs etc.... best to carry Your own..

I kind of meant if one of the cells dies in the battery you would have a spare and jumper leads for a flat battery.
Ha Ha, checking out the list of spares recomended here it's not hard to figure out we are driving old technology, and mostly worn out at that, aint it fun though.🤪
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

You do make a good point, preventative maintenance would include most of these items I imagine.
I'd imagine with the spark plugs if they are changed they should be fine for a few years, depending on amount of use.

If the NRMA can't get it going it goes on a tow truck no worries. NRMA do not keep a full stock of any belts on them and parts for any car.😂😂
A good old hand pump. In case you have a FLAT battery! When acid level rises to top then the battery is fully 'inflated' !!🙄
You are all forgetting the bloody trailer to carry all this stuff !!!!
Just get it serviced properly, join a good roadside assist group (RACV etc)
& take the basics, Inc the mobile to ring someone at home & get them to bring you what you need !
Step up to get out !!!
That is an incredible list of parts, was this to carry with you or just as spares at home? After 10 or 11 years stored in the garage,we fitted new brakes, points & leads, changed oil, added fuel , a battery & a set of tyres, started up well,,registered and on the road to the Hunter Valley for Barls wedding.i did forget the NRMA road service, but it wasn't needed anyway as the little girl cruised at 100-110 very comfortably.. Note - Be very careful jumping a 6 volt battery with a 12v jump pack,I have seen them blow the top out of the battery.

Just disconect the negative wire from the battery then start it with the jump pack, then take off the jump pack then replace the negative wire.
Smarter than the average bear Rose,i just didn't want to lead anyone into flashing 12 volts across a 6 volt battery,as i stated i have seen a few explode and it's not pretty.cheers les
