G'day
I have twin 40idf's and obviously my coil doesn't fit the original mounts because of hex bar... where is a good spot to put it and how do i attach it after ive moved it??
Is there a newer smaller coil pack that can be used?? this would be very useful if so..
cheers
Luke

Search for coil mount on the
Classic website
that might help! cheers jason
Is it also suitable to mount it on the firewall??

I use the one in the lower pic, puts the coil out of the way between the fuel pump and fan housing on top of the engine case, very secure and the stock wiring and plug leads all work. Cleans up the engine bay as you hardly notice it's there.

ive got a 36hp shroud with no coil mounts
mines on the firewall nothing fancy, just a longer HT lead
Yeh I'm still deciding if I'll put my coil on the firewall or on the case like matberry said, so I'll be watching this thread like a hawk.
anyone got a pic of that angled bracket in play behind the fuel pump....firewall sounds like a nicer idea. Easpecially since i think im going to out my breather box on the firewall.
I use custom bracket mounted on the case bolt ..

it doesn't get too hot that close to the case??? any pics mat??

cb john... how much oil do you spill changing that filter...???
not a drop..
From the top mount to the engine block mount, I changed to a higher output ignition system using a T coil and module, but you get the idea.

is the gt40 the only one that works on vw's?

The GT40 is the one not to use, seen lots fail.
I've been using the compufire ignition module and/or 35000 volt coil for some time with no drama's.

GT40R! my bad...
i have seen modern square shape ones on VW's in the past dunno if these work or not... if they do, they'd be ideal

use a GT40R you'll be walking in no time at all
they run at 9 volts thro a ceramic ballast resistor which is why they have the R in the name
feed 12 volts into one of them like a normal coil and it wont last long
if your gonna use one of those POS in a vw u need a GT40 not GT40R
as Matt said they fail with regular manotiny
your thinking of those non oil filled solid state coils
they work but you just have to make sure you dont get one that needs a ballast resistor
Yep, as Joel said you could get a smaller resin filled one. They are common on 90's model efi cars.
I have one from a magna lying around. IIRC it even fits on the factory vw coil mount.
.
THATS THE ONE JOEL!!! Type3lover... is this one for personal use or is it ready for a mail bag???
Do you lose any performance or reliability with the solid state ones??
cheers

How hard are these to wire up over the stock unit? anyone have a diagram or photo's of how to do this???? totally interested. Its also interesting to hear that the gt40's fail quite often. I got a dodgy one that was heating up alot and causing my car to stall and not start.... gt40 = bad??
cheers joel... already put a bid on!
like jason said; any different to wire up??

also, you could probabaly get a non GT40 version from an auto parts store hey.... like a 4cyl magna one..
theyre exactly the same to wire up as an oil filled coil
power in, tach/points out and the HT lead
GT40s are just luck of the draw
dads is still going perfectly after 8 years now as is his empi electronic ignition *touch wood*
yet ive had 2 die on me
one at only 6 months old
as well as an empi electronic igniton that lasted less than 6 months
Hey Luke
I've gone distributorless and I'm not looking back!
I'll mailbag it if you don't end up with the ebay one.
50,000 volts is pretty huge. It's going to draw a lot of primary current = more amps thru your points = reduced points lifespan possibly.
You could use a power transistor to overcome this. Your points will love you then :-)
Cheers, T 👍

Thanks T i'll let you know how the auction goes. appreciate it

Won the auction so will be using that coil. this wont be too much for my little motor - 50 000volts??
i hooked up the gt40 coil last night just cos i wanted to hear my baby for the first time and...... nothing.
i checked i was getting spark at the plug and nothing there either😢
plugs are new, leads are new, coil is new, distributor is old, dizzy cap is new..
any common faults to check??

points, condensor, rotor??
did it crank though??
Make sure your points are gapped. 0.016" is pretty much bang on. They'd have to be basically not opening at all to make it not spark though.
Use a multimeter or a test lamp to ensure that you have 12v at the coil (+) when the ignition is on.
Do the same on the coil (-) while turning the engine by hand to see if the points are in fact grounding.
Double check polarity, make sure you plugged the points connector back on in the the dizzy, make sure you put the rotor back on (been there done that! 😵💫 )
Let us know when you have spark!

havent we all
😊
my points used to love wet weather, 4 vent decklids may cool great but let the rain in beautifully
used to keep one of those tiny WD40 cans in my boot
thank god for pertronix
😂
